Thomas Jefferson was born April 13, 1743 in Shadwell, in the British colony of Virginia. His parents live on a plantation where slaves work. In 1767, Jefferson became a lawyer.
In 1769, Jefferson was elected to the House of Bourgeois (a sort of Parliament) of Virginia. He is a strong supporter of American independence from Great Britain. In 1776 he wrote these famous words in the Declaration of Independence
